Slipknot have garnered themselves a lot of criticism over recent years, specifically from their own fans, many claiming that they've lost their sound and have turned "emo" or "soft". This album may take a few listens to appreciate, but trust me, you will end up loving it. The album came with lyrics in the sleeve and CD text so I can see the track names in the car – two little things that mean so much to me. Corey Taylor has clearly used his past experiences to help with some of the lyrics and his voice sounds better than ever. A fantastic song which Jay Weinberg has stated was the first song they finished as it is such a Slipknot song they could have written it in their sleep. I would describe this as a concept album or “musical experience” whereby all the interludes and ballads fit in with the story and are a nice break from the headbanger songs in-between. It has some weird interludes, however if you are a fan of Slipknot this is quite normal. However, this album is up there with Vol 3. Those records hold a special place in my heart as they helped me through my teenage years of being angry at the man! I was 10 and 12 respectively when those records were released, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. Now for me personally, Slipknot will never beat their self-titled debut and Iowa.
